The Barbara Ehrenreich book whose title George couldn’t come up with is Natural Causes.
The “law” about all but self-consciously conservative organizations tending to grow more liberal over time is actually Robert Conquest, although it’s also referred to as O’Sullivan’s First Law (after John O’Sullivan). And he actually did put it in terms of politics: “Any organization not explicitly right-wing sooner or later becomes left-wing.” See Wikipedia for more detail.
